Lexington, VA – When I entered the state of Virginia I stopped at the welcome center. I asked about convenience store and truck stop food. I was told few tourists ask about this. I was the first. Strange.
I was told not to miss LeeHi Travel Center off I-64 in Lexington. How many people in welcome centers would think about a truck stop hours away? This was a place I had to see. It was a working vacation and the second leg of my Chicken Salad Tour. I smelled a story and the possibility of a great dining experience.
LeeHi Travel Plaza is one of the coolest places I’ve visited. It’s in the same fun category as the Mystery of the Desert near Benson, AZ. This is a beautiful, huge truck stop. It’s different. Antique toys, mostly vintage metal trucks and cars are displayed throughout the place. My kids loved it. I loved it too. Manager, Corey Berkstresser explained that his father, Bobby, saved his (Bobby) toys growing up. He began collecting and displaying them here.
The buffet is huge, fresh and well maintained. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is available. The choices makes deciding what to get difficult, but I like to try everything.
Chicken Salad
I was advised by my waitress that the chicken salad was popular. I can see why. It was a great sandwich. The texture was good. There wasn’t too much of anything on it. I’ve had mediocre chicken salad drowned in mayonnaise. It’s a sad way for a sandwich to go. LeeHi chicken salad is delicious and a must try on your chicken salad tour.
Whether you’re driving a big rig or a minivan, this is a wonderful place to stop especially if you have children along.
It’s a family operation. Visiting family owned truck stops is always a good experience for me. I find there is a lot of concern in maintaining the legacy that the previous generation built.
LeeHi Travel Plaza is big, but the service is warm and personal. The staff is great. It’s a family friendly atmosphere.
