Large Shrimp Sandwich-(not an oxymoron)

September 10, 2013 by alhebert Leave a Comment

Abbeville, LA  – Bourbon Street Delis are located in many ShopRite convenience stores in south Louisiana. If you’re going to pay $50 to fill up your tank, you might as well treat yourself to fresh Louisiana seafood at a very reasonable price.

Abbeville is a picturesque little town about 25 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. People here take fresh seafood for granted sometimes. The great cooks here don’t take preparing it for granted. They pay close attention to flavor.

I like when I can use the words “large” and “shrimp” in the same sentence.
This is one large shrimp sandwich!

The six-inch shrimp po-boy is served on soft bun. It’s brimming with nice size shrimp.

There were no baby shrimp here.I counted two dozen.  It’s impossible to close the bun without removing a few of these. It was seasoned and fried perfectly.

I had to try the bread pudding. Bread pudding is responsible for so much disharmony.

People love it or hate it. There seems to be no in-between. I like it. This is why I’ve dedicated my life to finding the best bread pudding in America. This bread pudding had a nice subtle flavor that would delight the purest. There are no raisins or fruit. It was not too hard and not too soft. I think Goldilocks would’ve liked it this way.  The flavor was good without being overpowered by cinnamon or nutmeg. I like it better than Martha Washington’s recipe.

They bake fresh yeast cinnamon rolls. These are great and not always easy to find.

Bourbon Street Delis are all a bit different. While it’s named after a famously raucous street in New Orleans, the cooking here isn’t the Creole type you’ll find in the Crescent City. It’s all Cajun and I like that.

The folks behind the counter at the BSD’s I’ve visited in Louisiana are allowed a bit of culinary creativity. Customers will find each one just a bit different. For instance, the breat pudding in Abbeville is different than the one on Interstate 10 in Jennings. It’s the same for the Mambo Combo sandwich.

If you’re filling up at a Shot Rite with a Bourbon Street Deli walk an extra few inside and experience real Cajun cuisine priced right.  A six-inch shrimp po-boy with fries and a drink will run you about $8. That’s in the same ballpark as a meal deal in most fast food restaurants.
