SMOKEY G’s BBQ – Van Alstyne, TX
If you’re heading down U.S. Hwy 75 take the Hwy 121 exit at Van Alstyn. You’ll see a Shell Station, now, look on the opposite side of the parking lot for Galen Gibson’s Smokey G’s BBQ. It’s neat looking little food trailer and that caught my eye. That’s not what got my attention.
This heavy, steel smoker got my attention. For me, when it comes to smoked meat or barbecue, this makes a difference. I was hooked, I had to try the food. I’m glad I did.
Many places I visit have a smoker built into a wall. Those work well. I really like seeing the old fashion smoker. I find there is a difference in flavor. When I spoke to Galen about this, he agreed. So do his loyal customers.
Smokey G’s top seller is the brisket sandwich. I can see why. It’s great. I also tried the hot link. It wasn’t so hot that you had to run for water or a beer. There was just enough kick for this Cajun. Texas sausage has a smoother texture than the course sausage here in South Louisiana. It’s different and good.
Galen’s prices are reasonable and he adds the tax into the price. I don’t know why more folks don’t do this. I’ve been to only a handful of places that do.
Smokey G’s BBQ is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This was m first time on Hwy 75. This is a must-stop when I drive through again.
